Kamiyah’s Story – Creating Lasting Memories

Kamiyah’s mom describes her five-year-old as sassy, smiley, and vivacious with a little bit of trouble maker, loving to play harmless pranks on her four older siblings. When Kamiyah became sluggish and started having headaches and a fever, her mom knew something was wrong. She could never have imagined, however, that the trip to the pediatrician’s office would have landed them in the hospital and eventually with a brain cancer diagnosis. After months of hospital visits and countless clinical trials, Kamiyah’s mom reached out to MJHS Hospice for help.

When we stepped in, the family was under an enormous amount of stress. Weekly visits with our social worker helped provide psycho-social support to help the family navigate the situation. And weekly visits with our nurse has given the family tools to manage Kamiyah’s symptoms at home. In fact, Kamiyah has not been hospitalized overnight since being admitted to our care. We have also helped the family access creative arts therapy so that the siblings have an outlet to express their feelings, and we brought them holiday cheer with dozens of gifts, song and merriment for Christmas.

Kamiyah’s mom recently noted that for the first time in months, Kamiyah is starting to be the bright light she used to be.
