Why Caregiver Support Matters
Caring for a loved one at the end of life is one of the most difficult journeys a family can face. On average, family caregivers provide nearly 43 hours of care per week* to a loved one in their final year of life.
When we think of hospice care, our minds often go to the patients—their physical needs, emotional well-being and peaceful transition. Yet another crucial group whose journey deserves urgent attention is the family caregivers. These dedicated family members and loved ones stand alongside terminally ill patients, offering unwavering support through some of life’s most challenging moments, while their own well-being often goes overlooked.
While insurance may cover some support, it is often limited and focused solely on the patient. At MJHS Foundation, we address this need by raising funds to support caregivers through the MJHS Golden Family (STAR) Fund, which raises money to provide additional Home Health Aide hours beyond what insurance covers—helping fill gaps in care, especially during nights and times when families cannot be present.
With the added support caregivers gain precious time to:
- Shop for groceries and ensure the fridge is stocked with meals
- Attend caregiver support groups to find guidance and relief
- Participate in religious services or spiritual communities that sustain them
- Handle essential family obligations such as school meetings, children’s activities, or even funerals
- Attend work regularly and on time
- Keep and attend their own medical and doctor appointments
By easing the load, these extra hours allow caregivers to show up fully for their loved one—with more energy, balance and peace of mind.
The Impact of Your Gift
Your support helps caregivers whose loved ones are receiving care from MJHS Hospice get the additional help they need. By giving them extra time to attend to their practical needs, your generosity eases their burden and allows families to focus on what matters most—being together in love and peace.
