The MJHS Golden Family STAR Fund

Supporting Caregivers

Providing support for caregivers is often an overlooked but critical part of caring for patients who are receiving hospice, especially if they are home. Although insurance provides support in the form of Home Health Aide hours, it is often not enough and it is only geared to the patient. This often results in a gap of care.

Like for Mary and John. Mary’s son, John became Mary’s caregiver when she became ill. He lived far away and was not able to be there for his mother every day. The Home Health Aide support that was provided by insurance only provided enough hours of care for her to be there during the day. At night, Mary was left alone to care for herself. The family didn’t have enough personal funds to hire a private nurse to come in at night to care for Mary. A tough reality for a lot family.

MJHS Golden Family STAR Program

Having been a caregiver herself, Sylvia Golden was aware of this reality. So, when she reached out to the MJHS Foundation, her goal was to help caregivers. After careful thought and consideration—and learning more and more about the shortage of Home Health Aide support provided to family caregivers in hospice, she decided to start the MJHS Golden Family Supportive Treatment and Resources (STAR) Fund. The Fund addresses the challenge by raising money to provide additional Home Health Aide support–over and above what patients are eligible to receive.

The fund has been widely successful and utilized throughout our hospice program by families in need, like Mary and John to name a few.

For every $23 you donate MJHS Hospice will be able to provide an additional hour of home health aide support to a deserving family. thank You!
