What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday at MJHS

Founded in 2012 by the 92nd St. Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday is a call to action to switch the holiday’s focus associated with consumerism and buying to giving.

Since its founding, the annual day has grown into a global movement that inspires millions to donate money, volunteer, and be generous. Giving Tuesday strives to build a world where generosity is at the heart of society. Giving Tuesday’s global network collaborates year-round to inspire generosity across the globe, with a mission to establish a culture of philanthropy as an everyday part of life.

When is Giving Tuesday?

This global day of giving is held annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. This year, Giving Tuesday is on November 30.

How does Giving Tuesday benefit not-for-profits like MJHS?

Since Giving Tuesday is one of the largest fundraising days of the year, not-for-profits like MJHS get a jumpstart on year-end fundraising with it. It is an excellent way to gain awareness among potential supporters. It is also an opportunity for not-for-profits to boost social media presence and increase awareness for their cause. The #GivingTuesday hashtag goes viral on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram each year, increasing the chance that not-for-profits will appear in the social media feeds of potential donors.

How does one participate?

GivingTuesday is free to participate. And who you choose to support and how is entirely up to you! The first thing that you need to do is find a cause that moves you. If you already have one in mind, you can go to that company’s social media or website to see how they are participating. Many organizations participate by getting a donor match, making your gift have a more significant impact. After you’ve committed yourself to a cause, there are many creative ways to raise funds. Some ideas include:

  • Volunteering. Volunteers make a difference in the lives of the people in their community. Volunteering can also be a great way to make new friends and further your career. Contact them and see if they need a helping hand at an event or special outing.
  • Organize a donation drive. This is a great way to rally people. Collecting clothes, food, books, and other items can be the focus of a donation drive. However, you should check with the not-for-profit you are collecting goods for before you start.
  • Start a Facebook fundraiser to collect funds from your friends and family for your particular cause!
  • You can also check out the #GivingTuesday site to see what others have done. The possibility are endless!

Whichever way you decide to participate, be sure to spread the word on your social media. Social media is a powerful tool for increasing awareness and encouraging others to participate.

How is MJHS participating?

MJHS is using this Giving Tuesday to raise funds and awareness for hospice programs. An MJHS board member has also generously agreed to match any donations up to $5,000! Your contribution allows us to provide compassionate and respectful care to families in our care who need it, as we did for Gianna and Anthony.

When Gianna or ‘G’ was diagnosed with cancer, Anthony struggled to spend the next ten years in and out of hospitals as her brother and primary caregiver. Feeling overwhelmed, Anthony turned to MJHS Hospice. With caring and compassionate support from their pediatric social worker and nurse, Anthony and ‘G’ were able to spend the final moments together, making memories Anthony will always cherish. And when ‘G’ passed, we could continue to support Anthony through our bereavement support program.

Together we can make a difference. #GivingTuesday
