What is Giving Tuesday?
Founded in 2012 by the 92nd St. Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday is a response to the consumerism associated with the holiday season. Giving Tuesday aims to shift the sentiment from buying to giving.
Since its founding, the annual day has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to donate money, volunteer, and be generous. Giving Tuesday strives to build a world where generosity is at the heart of the society. Giving Tuesday’s global network collaborates year-round to inspire generosity throughout the world, with a mission to establish a culture of philanthropy as an everyday part of life.
When is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is held annually on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. This year, Giving Tuesday is on December 1st.
How does Giving Tuesday benefit not-for-profits like MJHS?
MJHS is among the largest health systems in New York City area. Our health services include home care, hospice, rehabilitation, nursing care, research, and more. As a not-for-profit, many of our services are made possible thanks to the generosity of donors.
Since Giving Tuesday is one of the largest fundraising days of the year, not-for-profits like MJHS get a jumpstart on year-end fundraising with it. Not-for-profits benefit from Giving Tuesday by raising awareness among potential supporters. Giving Tuesday is also an opportunity for not-for-profits to boost their social media presence, increasing awareness. The #GivingTuesday hashtag goes viral on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram each year, increasing the chance that not-for-profits will appear in the social media feeds of potential donors.
How does one participate?
One of the best and easiest ways to participate is to make a direct donation to MJHS. By participating, you can help to transform your community. By supporting the causes and issues you care about, you can affect the positive change that makes the world a better place.
No matter if it’s donating money, helping out a neighbor, or participating in an issue that people care about, any act of generosity counts. The best way to start is by researching organizations and causes that matter to you to get an idea of how they participate in Giving Tuesday. Next, you can get involved in any of the following ways.
- The ultimate objective of Giving Tuesday is to raise funds, so donating is a very effective method to participate. No matter the size of your donation, you can rest assured those funds will make a difference.
- Some participate in Giving Tuesday by volunteering. Volunteers make a difference in the lives of the people in their community. As for your personal benefits, volunteering can help you make new friends and further your career.
- Organizing a donation drive is a great way to rally people around a good cause. Collecting clothes, food, books, and other items can be the focus of a donation drive. However, you should check with the not-for-profit you are collecting goods for before you start.
- Whichever way you decide to participate, be sure to spread the word on social media. Social media is a powerful tool for increasing awareness and encouraging others to participate. You might even ask some of your friends or followers to get involved through a Facebook challenge.
