Support End of Life Care Programs
Your gift to the Hospice and Palliative Care fund allows us to continue providing care that goes above and beyond
for our patients and families who are dealing with a terminal or advanced illness.
MJHS Hospice and Palliative Care is one of the largest and most respected not-for-profit providers of end of life care in the region, serving patients and families across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Nassau County. We are committed to offering patients and families dealing with a terminal or chronic illness with compassionate, expert care, along with peace of mind and comfort. Funds raised towards this program ensure we can continue to provide care that goes above and beyond during this special, but difficult time. Below are some programs we provide that are funded by grateful families and donors.
Pediatric Hospice Care and Support
No parent expects to outlive a child and no one wishes hospice care for a young person. So when we get the call that a child needs us, we mobilize a team with pediatric hospice expertise—to help families through the emotional roller coaster, provide tender nursing care, support healthy siblings and so much more. Because no parent ever wants to give up hope, MJHS Hospice is fortunate to be one of the few programs to have a Pediatric Palliative Care Waiver from the New York State Department of Health. This means children can still pursue curative treatment while receiving our hospice care. Your donation will allow us to continue to provide this incredibly unique care.
Palliative care gives specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. It focuses on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, physical stress and mental stress of a serious illness.
MJHS has the largest community home-based palliative care program in Greater New York, allowing our patients to receive services at home. Our program is nationally recognized for being innovative and for offering a wide range of specialty services to meet your loved one’s specific needs.
Patient Care Fund
Supported solely by charitable contributions, the fund is able to assist in the purchase of items and services deemed appropriate by the patient, patient’s family and MJHS caregivers, such as wheel chairs, walkers and grab bars. Each patient is eligible for up to $500 of assistance annually through the fund.
Culturally Sensitive Care and Education
The ability to understand, appreciate and interact with different cultures and belief systems is at the core of our values. Our community is diverse, and MJHS is committed to the ongoing training and education of our staff in order to provide tailored, culturally competent care. Support to MJHS Hospice will help us fund this important initiative so we can continue to tailor the care we provide so we meet our patients’ social, cultural and language needs.
MJHS remains an innovator in providing culturally sensitive end-of-life care across the broad spectrum of Jewish observance. Patients may elect to have a rabbinic advisor participate in their medical decision-making. Many of our facilities offer kosher meals, observe Jewish holidays and hold regular Jewish services. Additionally, MJHS offers specialized end-of-life care for Holocaust survivors and their families, addressing the unique emotional and psychological needs of the first, second and third generation survivor population.
Art & Soul™ Creative Arts Therapy
Art & Soul™ Creative Arts Therapy employs specially trained and licensed music and art therapists to meet the psychological and emotional needs of patients and their families. Using music, art and other creative approaches, our team creates a safe space for patients, families and children in the family unit to engage in a variety of activities:
- Create legacy projects
- Work through and express their emotions
- Receive grief and loss support
- Get counseling to develop healthy coping skills
- Lay the groundwork for bereavement
Grief and loss can impact our lives physically, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually. Because of the support of our donors, our trained MJHS counselors provide bereavement education and support to family of all ages at no cost to them for thirteen months after the death of a loved one.
Caregiver Support Groups
Caring for a sick family member can be physically and emotionally draining. We offer support groups to provide an important opportunity to take a break from the arduous tasks. These groups enable devoted family members and friends to meet alongside other caregivers and share information, strategies and encouragement.
MJHS Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. (Tax Id: 11-1630753) All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
